Chunking the text

Most of the students in the class lacked the skill of weeding out the added details in a story and focusing more on the details than the main idea of a passage. In order to refocus the kid's attention to the main idea of their reading, we reviewed strategies in chunking the text. I taught the students to number each paragraph by going down the page and placing a number every time something is indented and to circle keys words in the questions. Although, most of the students still struggle with determining a main idea of a reading, they are striving in answering corresponding questions because they look for the key words from a question within the text in order to choose an answer.
