Vocabulary Wall

Vocabulary

Match

Within almost every subject area, students are faced with vocabulary words. When the students first started learning grade level vocabulary, they would struggle with remembering what the word means. After several attempts to help the students build their vocabulary, I finally found something that proven to work. Each week we start by reviewing the vocabulary word and its definition. I always include a picture that I have drawn under the word for reinforcement. Before the students walk to lunch, I stand at the beginning of the line and state a vocabulary word and include a motion that connects to the meaning. As the students leave the room they must show me the motion and state the vocabulary word. The students look forward to lining up each day and love seeing the motion I come up with to match the word. Having students show the motion also works as a wonderful summative assessment because if they can't show the motion I know they may not understand definition. The students have shown a great deal of success with the use of the vocabulary wall, vocabulary match and also giving a motion as an example.
