5.12 Demonstrate skills in assessment and instruction with English language learners from diverse background and at varying English proficiency levels.

In order to meet the needs of the ELL student in the class, I often pull the student assigned and offer differentiated instruction to ensure the student is understanding the material. In the artifact, I previewed the weekly story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, to the ELL by showing a video of the story so the student can hear how the words in the story are pronounced before he tried reading the book himself. Following the story the students all created a flip chart listing the events from the story in sequencing order. For the ELL I provided him with the events already typed up and all he had to do was match the event to the sequence order. I found offering the student premade material, allows the student to focus more on understanding the skill.
