Math Data and Analysis
The math lesson I choose to use for the purpose of this assignment was on money. Students were learning the characteristics of coins and how to count amounts up to a dollar in change and identifying different paper money. The length of this lesson was the longest of any of the lessons I used for this assignment and was completed within about three weeks. This was one of the most successful lessons I have taught all on my own with each student showing some growth, with the exception of two students.
Chart 4.1, above shows the growth of each student from the pre-test and the post test. The results show growth for every student, but Lexie and Rocky. Lexie had a drop in her score, while Rocky has no data for his posttest due to his numerous absences. With less students declining, I thought the class average would be much greater. However, chart 4.2 shows an increase for the class average of about 12%. Although the average is not as high as I expected, I am still highly satisfied with the results and seeing the student's individual growth. Chart 4.1 breaks down the growth for each student and makes it easier to see the amount of growth each student made. I was able to see that at least four students made a growth of more than ten points. With success like this, I was able to reflect back on my lesson and examine what worked in this lesson that helped the students succeed. Besides taking more time on this lesson, I think the growth is contributed to the way I presented the lesson and made real world connections as much as possible throughout the lesson and on the test.
